Dal Makhani with Raita

I love indian food and am always wanting to make my own indian meals rather than get take out indian food.

Today I made my version of dal makhani with raita, It was quite easy to make and Im sure far from authentic but It tasted amazing and pretty close to the real thing with less calories, I also added extra veggies to make it a little healthier – this is a great vegetarian dish!

What you’ll need

3/4 cup uncooked lentils
1 tin kidney beans
1 grated carrot
3 diced tomatoes
1 brown onion
2 cloves garlic
1 cup water
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp garam masala
1/2 tsp chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric
3 tbsp natural yoghurt
4 springs coriander

For the Raita

4 tbsp natural yoghurt
1/2 red onion
6 mint leaves
2 coriander springs
1/2 cup grated cucumber
1/2 tsp garam masala
1/2 tsp lemon juice

handful spinach leaves to serve

How to

– In a saucepan brown the garlic and onion
– Add the kidney beans, lentils, chopped tomatoes, grated carrot and water
– Add the herbs and spices and bring to the boil
– Reduce heat and add extra water if necessary until lentils are cooked (approx 45 minutes)
– Once lentils are cooked add the yogurt and cook on low for a further 10 minutes
– In a bowl mix yoghurt, chopped mint and coriander, diced onion, grated cucumber, lemon juice and garam masala
– Serve lentils on a bed of spinach leaves topped with extra coriander and raita and enjoy!
